I believe this will be the last year I plant any number of bareroot evergreens. I used to crank out 150 in a few hours in the morning and then work on something else in the afternoon. Now, I plant 100 in a few hours in the morning and then take a bunch of ibuprofen. These are definitely bigger trees than the plugs I used to get from NCR, but I'm not sure I care at this point. I'm either going to start driving up to Itasca and picking up some plugs or give it up for good. I'll be an old ass man by the time these trees are anywhere near providing much for cover anyway.

I'm not even old and I refuse to plant bareroot conifers. Plugs only. Either way, it's a bunch of bending over, on the hands and knees, etc.

Then NCR went and closed up shop on me. If I ever plant more than a dozen or two trees again, it's gonna be plugs from Itasca. edit...what's really gonna suck is planting some hybrid poplars and silver maples in some RCG infested ground. Those I'm gonna have to tube and mat...

Stu--There is a guy from Villard that can get container spruce for $4 each. Good size, nice trees, and easy to plant. We did 36 in less than an hour. I think he will have them again next year, where he gets them--not sure?
Villard is probably 35-40 miles from you?

If this idea of pulling from the ditch to re-home naturally selected conifers works, I could see me doing 50/yr. I’m not so anti tree when I don’t have to write a check, and it only takes a couple minutes per tree.
It lowers the stress and guilt levels when I could just stop pulling up trees.

I'm not going to get into container trees, that's all shovel work. At least with bareroot I can use my tree bar on most of them. How many does a "we" comprise of? I may just plant a couple dozen plugs from Univ. of ID every year and be done with it. Those go in pretty easy. I did 50 of them in about an hour and half earlier this spring.

I hate planting trees and will never do it again. If I had any natural generation/re-gen of any kind of spruce or pine I wouldn't be planting evergreens either. If I don't plant them, there will be zero except for an occasional red cedar. I don't mind planting fruit trees, I actually enjoy that process. When I walk my woods and see an evergreen, I know that it's there only because I planted it. I do kind of enjoy that as well.

I have 100 Black Hills Spruce coming from Itasca in the next few days, plus around 40 oak. Might be my last bigger order for a few years, the planting is not bad, it is the cage/tube. Maybe the kids can do this in the future.

Putting in HP rooted cuttings (bareroot) gets the tree ahead of the RCG and improves survival. Plastic on wet ground isn't something I've done. I use woven polypro (e.g. lumite) instead. I'm guessing if the deer will leave the central leaders alone, the HPs will be 6-8' tall by the end of summer.
