Picked up my SWCD trees yesterday. I found out that I bought 25 norway spruce in addition to the highbush cranberry. I'll get them all planted today.

I was not excited to remember I had ordered more norway spruce. Yes, they are good looking trees. I picked up my neighbor's order yesterday too. His dogwoods had huge roots. edit...I finally looked at my invoice. I ordered white spruce not norway. I remember doing so now as I had a spot with some shade where I figured the whites would do better than the norways. I got my trees and shrubs planted, then I went over and helped the neighbor get his planted. His place should really change in the next few years.

It is always a hard thing for me to do, but I took out every other spruce along the edge of a pond. I had them on about a 6 or 7 foot spacing. It will be better in the long run.

Squirrels planted this tree in my backyard. Lady Kooch pulled it thinking it was a weed and up came an acorn attached to it. So we put it in a pot. If it lives we will transplant it to Nassau Deluxe.

Been thinking what to do with those rolls of chain link fence I got from Stu some time ago. At one time I had planned to use the material for a road across my swamp......but went the corduroy tamarack route instead so those rolls just lay there ....waiting for another need. A few days ago.....I thought I should start an nice orchard and have a small garden. Then it occurred to me that the area near my gate when you enter the property has a beautiful setting for such a garden / orchard......right alongside a small swamp. This land is only a few feet above the water table....so things really grow here and the low swamp ensures a water level for drought times. Then I thought that the 8' high chain like would make this a reality.....and viola.....I got a plan. Next year I will use my post hole digger to put 12' steel posts into the ground for an area about 15 yards wide and 50 + yards long (depending on how much wire fence fabric I have). I will erect the fense so I can drive through from one end though the other by opening some gates......thereby I can get my wheelers or tractor inside the fence to do the needed work with both garden and trees.). After the trees mature I may reduce the fence size to just keep the critters out of the garden......and perhaps a few favorite apple trees. Thie area is super easy access and I would not have to clear or do anything other than erect the fence. My neighbor loves to garden......maybe he can do that hand work and we can split the bounty. Win / Win. (I hate garden stuff....but love the fresh food as much as the next guy.).

insert code here Muzzleloader season closed yesterday, so I walked some areas I had stayed away from from the last 2.5 weeks. They edge of the field was behind where we planted the rows of spruce, decades ago. the flowering crab in front of me was planted in the open field. Now this has become a bedding area.

I always did that in early spring. Have you had luck with bare roots in the fall?

I always did that in early spring. Have you had luck with bare roots in the fall? Yes, I have done a bunch this way. They don’t usually come out bare root. I get a good amount of dirt to stick. If I see a good one while hunting I will pull it and bring it out with me. I think it is close to 100% survival rate.
