Yes it is. I look around when I'm planting trying to picture what it will hopefully look like in 10-15 years. At some point, this property is going to be "one of a kind" in the immediate area. I hope I'm around to see it. I wonder that about my place, if I keep going at the pace I am. What I wonder about most is if the trees and shrubs I'm releasing will ever actually change the composition of my place, or if it'll be a never ending maintenance project to keep the most natural of naturals at bay. [br. I feel young forest openings, a bit of rye, clover, and turnips will be the best in that country. I am on lighter soil on my place in the same deer zone. I am probably about down with much habitat management up there. Last summers clear cut will give browse for those deer until I am in my 70’s. Time to just hunt and enjoy, it is what it is.

Nobody is too old to go out with a cane and coffee can filled with gypsum to sweeten up the right hazel bush.

Got my silver maples planted, matted, and tubed. Near the crick/ditch I could shovel down about 15", then hit frost. About 75 yards from the crick/ditch I couldn't get the shovel down an inch...frozen solid. I ended up planting the maples closer to the crick than I had originally intended, but it should still work. One of the north neighbors stopped and shot the shit for a bit. Wanted to know what I was planting. Conversation turned to deer hunting as we hadn't seen each other since before muzzie season. He said they shot nothing...because none of the deer would come off my place until after legal shooting hours

You have 6" of canary straw on top of that frozen ground? Probably more like 3" I've got canary grass holes I'd like to excavate some day. One could be a hell of a forage pond if I ever get around to it.

Yup. I've had frost in the RCG swamps as late as early June before. Shit. Didn’t realize it was the frozen tundra up there. That’s crazy.

All I want to do is get some shade on the RCG to see if that will thin it out or kill it. I have been able to get some tamaracks established in the same area by laying a lumber tarp on different sections for a year. I move the tarp, plant tamaracks, and repeat the following year. I couldn't get any tamaracks from SWCD this year though. I've about given up on the pond idea here.

Just put another 16 Norway Spruce and a dozen oak plugs in the ground after work. Beautiful day, had a rooster land about 50 yds from me. This tree row should be a magnet if I can get good survival.
