Mine grew 5’-6’ the first year from cuttings. This was back in 2012. They’re probably 35-40’ now but have been that way for awhile. 25’ after 4-5 years. I used black plastic. Had to fence end of first year because the deer liked them in august. How thick are they, I assume you could hang a stand in them now? They're not bad at the base. I'll have to look closer next time I'm up there. Not sure if they're big enough 15' up.

How much growth do you get on the hybrid poplar? I should look into those again. It's been so long since I've grown any I don't really know. I'd guess at my old place I got close to 5-7' a year. This cultivar of HP gets bushy and wide, with not a huge crown. Kind of like Lombardy poplar without all the disease issues. My neighbor wanted 35 of them, so I just ordered 50 to get the price discount (think the additional 15 were around $5). He texted me last weekend that he had 51 poplars...Musser threw in a bunch of extras. They did the same thing with my silver maples. I ordered 10 and they sent 15. A guy should probably just order 5 of them, protect them for a couple years and you'd have your own never ending supply of cuttings. I plan to take some long cuttings of these in the future and shove them in the dirt as far as I can. See what happens.

DN-2, DN-34, NE-222, and OP-367 according to my planting log.

My HP look more like cottonwoods, but if you cuttings, come get them next winter. When I used to grow them, I was told to harvest when dormant and put in plastic bag in the freezer.

I've got canary grass holes I'd like to excavate some day. One could be a hell of a forage pond if I ever get around to it. All I want to do is get some shade on the RCG to see if that will thin it out or kill it. I have been able to get some tamaracks established in the same area by laying a lumber tarp on different sections for a year. I move the tarp, plant tamaracks, and repeat the following year. I couldn't get any tamaracks from SWCD this year though. I've about given up on the pond idea here. Two or three years ago, I sprayed some strips in RCG and stuck in willow cuttings. It looked like a complete failure, but today I noticed some fine willow growth in those strips. I would guess 10% success. I had used mostly what I think is sandbar willow which has fine growth. Today, I grabbed some diamond (Bebbs?) willow and stuck it in those strips. I can still see where grass other than RC is growing in some/parts of those strips. Have you tried this? Stuck willows on the edge of those tarps?

I think there's maybe 6 or 7 still alive. I haven't tried willows besides some Streamco willow cuttings my first spring here. I brought them from my old place. They grew well, but were rub magnets. They got rubbed to death in year two or three.

I’m done, planted over 100 trees, with most being caged or tubes... too many . Getting too old for this.
Next year 30 at the most !! 😊 Kids can help
