I noticed a few burr oaks dropping akerns today. I'd guess there's going to be a whole bunch dropping in the next 7-10 days.

The pin/red oak acorns in my yard were dropping hard today. The squirrels were working the trees and dropping half that they touched.

nothing for acorns falling yet here in Big Lake. I mean nothing.
Some years you could use a scoop shovel on the driveway and fill 5 gallon pails. I havent looked up close in the trees to see whats there. Mostly red oaks around the driveway.... Sadly,,,,,, Oak wilt has shown up in the last month. Yikes. My look and feel of the front of the house will be changing dramatically. I have to hire a tree service to drop them because so many the only way to drop them would be right on the asphalt. CRAP!

Played golf yesterday and noticed the oaks were dropping quite a few acorns. It's that time. I got quite a few acorns too. I got this tree that I saved as a seedling when we build our pole shed in 2008. Now its 18 feet high and putting out nice acorns. Lots of those Oaks were released when I logged. Feels good having those trees for the future.

Acorns starting to fall fast and furious last night. Lots of banging on the roof of the cabin.

An interesting observation on oaks and northern locations. We saw both Pin and Burr oaks loaded with acorns at Kettle Falls www.google.com/maps/place/Kettle+Falls,+MN+56649/@48.5026828,-92.639596,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x52a4b04f46a2972f:0xaca8b03d1dcabefe!8m2!3d48.5026834!4d-92.639596 a few days ago. When I say loaded, I mean as in limbs bending down heavily due to the load. The folks that took us to the location said that when they were kids (grew up there, now runs the resort her Dad bought back when she was a little kid...she's now around 60) there were zero oaks of any kind. As far as Kettle Falls goes, if you ever get the chance to go I'd highly recommend it. There is a hotel there now. Plenty of interesting history regarding that building. I have neighbors with a deer shack somewhere up near there. They waited 6 years to get bear tags and baits are not being hit. Lots of acorns and berries from what I hear. My wife and I baited and hunted bears about 30 years ago. We were baiting up north about this time of year and there was a single but oak in a small field. One morning, the sow was under the tree and the cubs were up in the tree. Fun to watch.

I didn't want to be bringing bears to camp with the left over bacon grease. She said bears weren't generally a problem there unless/until somebody starts baiting them in the area. Talked to a couple guys who deer hunt there. I was surprised at how well they do and how many deer they see. I did notice plenty of red clover/alfalfa/treefoil fields in the general area. There was one place that must have been growing veggies to sell in some form. Lots of sweet corn, tomatoes, and peppers. That was maybe a mile from Lake Kab. The wild roses in camp had obvious deer browsing on the tips. I think a guy could likely depend on at least one deer a year up there without too much work.

Went out and picked up a couple hundred burr oak acorns today. A guy I communicate with in the Matsu Valley of AK says he thinks he can grow burr oak there. He wanted northern hardy acorns. From his description of winters there, our winters here in central MN are more brutal temperature wise. It will be interesting to see if any of the central MN burr oaks survive and grow up there.

One thing I never realized....until I visted Alaska......is that they can grow ALLOT of vegetable crops there.....very nicely. Why?......they have such long daylight hours and a perfect summer climate for growing things. Amazing vegetable crops there.

Took a short walk in my oaks at the Swift County farm. I was surprised there are not many acorns at all ? Looks like a down year here in Pope/Swift ?
Decent amount in my yard, but nothing special .
