With the purchase of a new Great Plains 3P500 drill I (actually it's slightly used) got myself suddenly studying all about switch grass and forbs and such. Never thought I would go there.....but here I am. Gotta make a trip over into Wisconsin and pick it up in the coming weeks. Exciting stuff.

I got a few that drive me nuts too. Winch / Wench and more. I think it's Big Jerry that always uses ________ and drives me up a wall. I like some slang terms.....and SALEING is on of 'em. Grin. .......and I'll have you know.....I was a straight A student through the 8th grade. We wont talk about high school tho.(notice my "tho"). I seldom took a book home in high school. Now I have seen it all, some of us work for a living and don't spend allot of time wordsmithing grammar for a deer forum. If it offends you stop reading my post.

Never thought I would go there.....but here I am. Gotta make a trip over into Wisconsin and pick it up in the coming weeks. Exciting stuff. Why did you switch drills? Or was the Tar River not a drill? You know.....that is a good question. Yes....the Tar River is definitely a no-till drill. Mine is a five footer. 1. I like machinery and playing with these things. I like nice toys and the GP / LP will likely last for many decades. 2. I prefer the seed metering system made by Great Plains / Land Pride. It's better precision and the flutes are steel rather than nylon. 3. The GP/LP drills will last two lifetimes. But they do cost lots more. 4. I think I will prefer the Individual press wheels over the rolling basket as found on the Tar River. But the jury is really out on that.
5. The Tar River depth control means is a bit wonky......but once you learn how to operate it.....it works quite well. Especially in light soils. Same can be said for most any drill I s'pose. 6. FINALLY. The biggest reason is that I want to plant some switch grass and forbs to make some thick cover, bedding, and screens. I can do some of that with the Tar River.....but I can do tha and more with the GP. 7. Finally too.....I found a good deal on a year old drill and I can not pass by a good value. The previous owner went to a larger tractor and drill. The last drill I bought was right after my wife had heart surgery.in July 2021. These little drills were almost non-existent at the time (covid ad supply and transit issues) and a Tar River was affordable and I found one to buy. Kinda went out on a limb with a fairly quick decision. Now, I wonder WTH I was waiting for. I told my wife if she does not want me buying more grain drills....then she should stop having heart surgery. (Grin - I did not really tell her that. She does not know yet that I bought the drill). After selling my JD71 Two-Row Planter and the Tar River drill.....I will wont have a huge increase in valuations. I think I could be satisfied with the Tar River, had Not bought the Gp.... Its my hobby (and weakness) and I cannot justify it. lol.

The guy buying my Tar River Drill seems to have forgotten to come here and pick it up and to PAY me for it. I think I will put it back on the market. He is too busy driving to his land in MO to honor his word. Last weekend I plowed out my place so he could come here to pick it up. Then he drops out. Then he is supposed to be here middle of last week....no show. Now he does not answer my text. Grrrrr. Not too happy with him. Guess I will have to sale it again. .

I get the same thing at shows. Spend half an hour talking to a guy about a knife. He takes a card and says he'll be in touch and never hear from him again.

Foggy, can you run pel line or potash through your drill? Are they too corrosive on metal parts?
I am just wondering if they would give you a way to create sweet spots in your plots.
Are your soils low on potassium?

Are your soils low on potassium? I've read that you could apply some fertilizer in the drill......but I dont do that.....and I dont know anyone that does so. Too many other ways to apply fertilizers.
