We are half way through our 14 week rifle season. My spikes are dwindling. I think I am down to one or two from 5-6. The neighbors will never learn. I passed a huge 4 pointer Saturday. He was way past the ears with 7” forks. I think he was 3.5. I have a couple 8’s I was holding out for but have no pics of this deer. He was cruising at 3pm but if he comes back I won’t pass him again. The 8’s are still nocturnal so hopefully they stay that way until next weekend. 14 weeks??? Wow. Sarcasm but it is roughly Oct 15th to Dec 5th. Just enough to make sure 90% of the yearling bucks are killed.

Every thing worked as planned yesterday evening. 3 does and a fawn came out and were feeding 25 yards from blind. Waiting for the buck that I had on cam yesterday morning to follow them out. Well the 3 does kept looking to opposite side of food plot. I couldn't pickup binocs and look as I had front window open on Redneck and the does probably would of caught me moving. Finally the does moved a little so I could look with binocs to other side of plot, sure as hell the buck was over there with another doe. No way was he coming over to check the does seeing he had one all ready. Been my luck this season. Also the dusting of snow turned out to be a little more.

As a Minnesota hunter, I sure would like a rifle season at the point you were at.

Hiked through about 8" of snow to my spot in the hemlocks. Looks like the migration us on because there are tracks everywhere. Hopefully today is the day.

This is one of my first wood carvings that I made decades ago for my uncle. It was made from a block of pine of some sort and I Inherited it after he moved to the happy hunting grounds. I can remember my Dad showing the first deer stand I had ever seen and that was in the early to mid 60’s. He had nailed a small platform about 6 feet up in a tree. I think state law said they couldn’t be over 6 feet up. Previous to that, no one used deer stands. They stood behind a tree, or sat on a log or stump. Most of the hunting was done by deer drives and people didn’t stand in one location for much longer than an hour. Who else hunted before deer stands were very common? My first bow kill was from standing on a limb on a bur oak. Recurve bow.

The first stands were what ever scrap lumber was laying around, probably 8-10’ up. For years my dad sat at the base of the same giant maple on top of a ridge. My first few years were spent next to him there. The spot was called “old faithful”, a lot of deer died on that ridge.
